We are continuing our Locality Spotlight series, and this month we are focusing on the Lochee Connecting Carers Café.

The café meets:

  • 2nd and 4th Thursday of every month
  • 10am to 12pm
  • The Friary, Tullideph Road, Dundee, DD2 2PN

Last month, we were invited along to meet the group and enjoy the incredible selection of cakes and traybakes available at the weekly community café, which is run by volunteers at The Friary.

On the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month, the group meet to share experiences, learn from one another, access support from Carer Support Workers and, most importantly, enjoy some time for themselves in a welcoming and relaxed environment.

We spoke with Kirsty, Ally and Roy about their experiences of attending the group, including what they personally gain from it and how it has helped them in their caring roles.

“Take that first step – don’t be scared…”

Kirsty spoke about how simply connecting with the café has helped build her confidence and opened up opportunities that have improved her health and wellbeing, including helping her access an NHS dentist.

“You can vent your frustrations and you know you’re not going to be judged…”

Ally, who cares for her son, spoke about the support she receives from the group, even if it is simply having a listening ear from people who understand what she is going through.

“It’s a brush with humanity.”

In this short clip, Roy explains how attending the group gives him a much-needed break from his caring role and an opportunity to connect with others.
