Locality Spotlight – Men’s Carers Club

This month, our Locality Spotlight is shining on our Men’s Carers Club, a friendly and informal group where male carers can take some time away from their caring role, meet others and enjoy some good company.

The group meets on the first Friday of every month, from 11am to 1pm at Craigowl Church, Turnberry Avenue.

Whether it’s having a cuppa and a chat, playing a board game or simply enjoying some time in the company of other men who understand the realities of caring, the group offers a relaxed space to socialise and connect.

We recently spoke with Fraser and Aaron about their experiences of the group and what keeps them coming along.

Fraser has attended the Men’s Carers Club since it first launched. He continued coming to the group following the loss of his wife, whom he cared for, and values the friendship and opportunity to get out of the house that the group provides.

“It’s a good laugh, it gets you away from what you’re dealing with on a daily basis.”
Fraser

For Aaron, who is an unpaid carer as well as a dad to young children, joining the group came at a particularly difficult time.

“When I first heard of the group I was in a bad place mentally… and it’s had a massive impact on me as a person.”
Aaron

Their experiences highlight just how important having somewhere to meet, talk and enjoy time away from the pressures of caring can be.

If you’re a man who provides care or support to a loved one, you’d be very welcome to join us.
