Young Carer Shopping Card

Dundee Carers Centre have developed an electronic Shopping Card for young carers who have responsibilities for shopping and picking up medication for family members.

The shopping card, the first of its kind in Scotland for young carers means that they continue to support the person they are caring for without having additional concerns especially when accessing protected period in supermarkets and pharmacies, during the current COVID-19 crisis.  The initiative has already attracted significant interest from young carers organisations across Scotland and the Centre is currently supporting other organisations to produce their own versions of the card.

“We identified that due to panic buying, and increased restrictions due to the lockdown, some young carers were experiencing difficulties and increased anxiety in carrying out this role.
We liaised with Dundee Volunteer & Voluntary Action (DVVA) to raise awareness of this card with local retailers and supermarkets, Local Authority and Health & Social Care partners and have also been in contact with Tayside Division of Police Scotland so their officers are also aware of the scheme.”

So far, Dundee Carers Centre have issued 20 cards to young carers and are continuing to take referrals. If you are a young carer and have the responsibility for doing the shopping and/or collecting medication, please contact the Centre on 01382 200422 or email [email protected]
